Modal Characterization of Manual Wheelchairs

Manual wheelchair (MWC) users are exposed to whole-body vibrations (WBVs) during propulsion. Vibrations enter the MWC structure through wheels’ hub, propagate according dynamical response, and finally reach user’s body by footrest, seat, backrest, handrims. Such exposure is likely be detrimental health a source of discomfort fatigue which could, in daily life, impact users’ social participation performance sports. To reduce WBV exposure, solution relies on response modelling simulation, where model could indeed used identify parameters that improve dynamic. As result, it necessary first assess response. In this approach, experimental modal analyses were conducted eleven MWCs, including sport MWCs (tennis, basketball, racing). Through procedure, properties (i.e., frequencies, damping parameters, shapes) identified for each part. The results pointed out investigated, even within same group, revealed specific vibration properties, underlining difficulty developing single vibration-reducing system all MWCs. Nevertheless, several common related comfort design identified.
